Description:The first lighthouse to be built in Liverpool Bay, the original Coffin Island light was lit in 1812. It was the fifth lighthouse to be built in Nova Scotia. In 1999, the Coffin Island Lighthouse Heritage Society attempted to save the 88-year-old tower from toppling into the sea by placing a new barrier-rock wall along the eroding shoreline. Unfortunately, the power of the ocean moved the huge rocks and erosion continued. In 2006 the battle was lost and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans demolished the old light, replacing it with a fibreglass lighthouse. The light is still operational.
