Medway Head Lighthouse Scenic Route: Lighthouse Route
County: Queens

44° 06' 10.6'' N

Description:Medway Head Lighthouse is located approximately 5 km from Port Medway on Long Cove Road, a quiet dead end route that runs along the coast. It is a 12 metre high pepper pot shape wooden structure and was built in 1983. It is the fourth structure to be located at this site, the first light being built in 1851.

This light is still in operation and continues to guide fishing boats into port. It is situated on three acres of oceanfront land with a great vista of the islands that protect the entry to the harbour. The lighthouse is adjacent to the road so is easily accessible and on the lawn is a picnic table. A marble commemorative bench has been installed on the sea side of the lighthouse and provides a quiet contemplative spot to observe the ocean. A previous lighthouse built in 1927 has since been converted into a private residence and sits atop a hill adjacent to the site.

The Port Grocer in Port Medway, the social hub of the village, offers an excellent lunch service and there are washroom facilities. They also can provide picnic lunches to take away. This is an active fishing village worth exploring, and includes an historical seaside cemetery, an old meeting house, and two churches. Another smaller lighthouse is located in the municipal park beside the fishing wharf and on summer weekends there are activities such as pub nights, a readers’ festival, antique stalls, art shows, etc. to further enhance your visit.

Hope you will make the trek!

News and Events:The sixth annual Lighthouse Awareness Art and Craft Show will be held in The Warehouse in the municipal park adjacent to the wharf.
