Port Greville Lighthouse Still Guides the Way
Visitation up in 2009
Despite the drop in the number of tourists visiting Nova Scotia, visitation at the Port Greville Lighthouse, at the Days of Sail Museum, was up in 2009. June-August, the numbers increased by about 10% and September saw an increase of about 30% over September, 2008! This included two large bus tours from the United States set on seeing over 50 lighthouses in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and a lighthouse touring group on motorcycles.
Due to weather concerns in the summer of 2009, plans for touch-ups were put on hold but first thing on the list for 2010 is a paint job for the lighthouse. Meanwhile, the light still shines every night, beaconing to villagers and visitors alike and recalling a time long ago when the lighthouses truly were the keepers of our villages.
The lighthouse used to stand on the cliff above the harbour, but was moved to the Days of Sail Museum after it was brought back home to Port Greville from the Coast Guard College grounds in Sydney, NS. Read more about it on the Port Greville Lighthouse Page.
