Originally established as a fog horn station in 1875, the Cape d'Or lightstation is perched halfway up dramatic cliffs rising out of the turbulent Minas Channel. The trim white-and-red concrete lighthouse, with its penetrating fog signal, stands watch over the treacherous Fundy fogs and tides. Cape d'Or is the only lighthouses in Nova Scotia with overnight accomodation. Guests can stay in a former lightkeeper's house and enjoy spectacular views of Cape Split and lofty Ile Haute. This is an excellent spot for viewing seabirds, peregrine falcons, dolphins, and seals. A replica lighthouse in the parking lot above the light station offers interpretive and information services.

Keepers' houses open. On Route 209, watch for signs for Cape d' Or. Turn off between Spencers Island and Advocate Harbour and at 0.6 km (0.4 mi.) turn left onto a grave] road. Drive 5.5 km (3.4 mi.) to the light. Restaurant and guest house in two renovated keepers' houses, fire pits, bird watching, rare plants, seals, and dolphins, view tide rips.
